Tutorial: How to make your own moleskine icons?
Posted on May 6, 2008
Filed Under Tips, moleskine, themes | 11 Comments
This tutorial is for those that want to make icons for moleskine based on existing moleskine icons, either for private use or for release to the community.
Templates are available here:
- ~/Library/moleskine/00 (store icons for first level folders - looks like envelopes)
- download template here
- ~/Library/moleskine/01 (store icons for second level folders - looks like moleskines)
- download template here
- ~/Library/moleskine/02 (store icons for cassettes)
- download template here
You will need:
- Photoshop
- Photo, graphics or any images that you want to use as moleskine icon
Step 1: Open up the moleskine template in Photoshop
In this example, I use the 00 template, which is the template for folder. You will see a folder labelled zebra-sample in Layers
![]()
Step 2: Prepare the template for editting
You will see 3 folder and 1 layer. Ignore the top-most and bottom-most layer.
- Make changes to top-change colour ….. - This layer is the background. It changes the background colour of the folder. In this template, the background colour is white
- Make changes to graphics - put contents inside - This layer is the foreground. In this template, it contains zebra stripes. This folder contain a crop box, so you can put any images larger than the box, and only graphics within the box is shown
![]()
If you expand the folder, you will see all the zebra stripes that I drew manually.
![]()
Just delete them

Step 3: Start creating your own icon
Ok, so now you have a blank folder. Put anything images that you want inside.
![]()
I am just going to use my current wallpaper to illustrate how easy it is. I made a printscreen, then resize it to be slightly larger than the icon.
![]()
Drag the screenshot directly into the folder. You will see that anything outside the crop box is not shown.
![]()
You can drag it around, rotate, scale… and your image won’t leak out. It’s that easy.
![]()
And so I am happy with the placement below.
![]()
Step 4: Saving the icon
Now you can prepare to save the icon. Click on the eye button of the bottom-most layer. This will hide the layer to make the background transparent.
![]()
Go to File > Save for Web & Devices …
![]()
I use PNG-24, preserving the transparency. This keeps the file size small but retaining high quality. I am not sure what it means, but it does what I want. Then just press save

Compatibility of TimeCapsule and McAffee iVirus

I have recently received a few reports that after users installed McAffee iVirus, TimeCapsule no longer works for them. TimeCaspule just crashes at startup. n0m0n has posted here that the latest update for iVirus has no more issue with TimeCapsule. Thanks n0m0n.
I did not install iVirus, so I did not know what was the issue, but it’s no longer relevant now I guess.

New moleskine theme released: water

I like the element theme in moleskine, so I made a whole variation of it. Some of you probably spot this in screenshots of previous moleskine release. Just managed to complete the whole set. I think a fire theme from the element theme is not bad too. I have a few more themes that I am working on, but it’s only fun to make the first one, the rest are repetitive work that i dread doing, which is the reason why I have a few themes that will probably never be released because they are not complete.

Changes:
- hide Applications (A very popular request)
Tap on status bar to toggle hiding mode. Then tap on the application that you want to hide, the row will turn dark. To unhide, tap again.
I know my releases have been quite frequent, but don’t expect the same after June when I graduate. This definitely can’t support me, so i have to find a job :p
Import text file to moleskine - moleskine 0.38b1, WildEyes! 0.13b1 released

Here’s one of the most requested function, import text file to moleskine. This is done via function integration between WildEyes! and moleskine. You will only see the additional option of importing notes from file in moleskine if you have added the note from WildEyes!. At this point, it is best to add one file at a time, although you can try to add multiple files from WildEyes!, but you will not be able to see which file you are adding to a particular folder in moleskine. Not yet. I think it imports in the order of the last import first

here’s the change list
moleskine
- added Russian language, thanks to Kovalsky from iPhones.ru
- improved accelerometer sensitivity
- added function to import notes from Wildeyes!
- disabled browsing when reordering notes
WildEyes!
- added function to import notes to moleskine (only available for plain text file supported by WildEyes!)
A few users have also asked how they can transfer files from their computer to their iPhone/iPod to view them with WildEyes! So I made a video of how to use SSH in both Windows and Mac, transfering text file to iPhone/iPod. The program I used for Windows is SSH Secure Shell Client, and for Mac, it’s CyberDuck
if you are wondering why i can copy and paste from Windows to Mac, I was using Synergy. It allows me to use the same keyboard and mouse in 2 computers, and move the mouse across the screen as though it’s one huge monitor.. cool.. I like integration
And the second video shows how you can import notes using WildEyes!, to moleskine. Note that both video were not made at the same time, so you’ll see that the content of the text file created in the 1st video is not the same as the 2nd video. To get the option to import notes, tap once. Tapping twice will launch it directly.
Server issues

Some time in the next few days, I will be migrating the repository from the Singapore host to US host because most of the traffic comes from there, and that I have exceed 1000% the quota bandwidth for this month. Seems like hosting the repository in the current server will not be practical. Just waiting for confirmation from the US site, before i make the migration.
How will you be affected? The repository may be temporarily unavailable, but I am not sure when will that be. I might move this site as well if it is not too troublesome, so you might see the site and the help section down as well. If anyone knows how I can make the migration and still keep my repo URL and site URL, please do inform me.
So just in case some problem came up and you need to contact me in the forum, please be patient till it is up again.
MRTSchedule v0.51 released

Finally, finished up with standardizing at least the icons and splash pages of my applications. MRTSchedule is a guide to train schedules in Singapore. Changes are superficial, aside from that, some users have been complaining about difficulty downloading MRTSchedule. You guys should have no problem with this, tested and working.
